How can I retrieve Description and other column information?
I want to know the query to retrieve Column information that we can see from table Design view of Enterprise manager, such as Column name, Pk or not, FK table, Data Type, Null or not, Description(Specially Descrition).
Is there any sp for this or any query for this?
Thank you all...type
sp_help tablename|||select * from INFORMATION_SCHEMA.TABLES
select * from INFORMATION_SCHEMA.CONSTRAINT_COLUMN_USAGE
select * from INFORMATION_SCHEMA.KEY_COLUMN_USAGE
See BOL for more information about schema.|||You can also use
INFORMATION_SCHEMA.columns
cheers
-ss|||I too would like to get at the Description and I tried all of the above but Description doesn't seem to be there. I looked at all the INFORMATION_SCHEMA views and found nothing. I checked the system tables for the DB in question and found nothing. Could the Description be something internal to EM that isn't available to clients?|||What do you mean by description?|||I assume the Column Description you can enter in EM when designing a table. It's the first item on the Columns tab.|||OK...I usually maitain my data dictionary separatley...
You need to look up
fn_listextendedproperty
Never really used it....|||I assume the Column Description you can enter in EM when designing a table. It's the first item on the Columns tab.
Check this table:
select * from sysproperties|||Yup... Works fine.
Thanks Brett..|||select * from sysproperties
Works as well but may take extra coding to figure out the id and smallid so the data for the correct column can be identified.
Thanks...|||It works!!! Assuming a Table name of 'KB' and a column named 'Title' this gets the description.
declare @.tbid integer
declare @.colid integer
Select @.tbid=id from sysobjects where xtype='u' and name='KB'
Select @.colid = colid from syscolumns Where id=@.tbid And name='Title'
select value from sysproperties where id=@.tbid and smallid=@.colid and name='MS_Description'
Thanks snail for the pointer to sysProperties.|||Thanks all..
I think we have to know sysproperties table joined with which table..|||Can't help with the JOIN. There are three tables here and I haven't figured out how to JOIN two yet! :)|||Now I am finishing ...
This works! the following three tables joined gives what I asked.
I hope this helps all...
Thank you all for considering
Use Northwind
SELECT sysobjects.name AS [Table], syscolumns.name AS [Column], sysproperties.[value] AS Description
FROM (sysobjects INNER JOIN syscolumns
ON syscolumns.id = sysobjects.id) LEFT JOIN sysproperties
ON sysproperties.smallid = syscolumns.colid AND
sysproperties.id = syscolumns.id
where sysobjects.name = 'Orders'
-- PS
sysobjects.name : table Name (WHERE sysobjects.xtype = 'U')
sysobjects.id : table ID
sysproperties.smallid : Column id
sysproperties.[value] : Description
You can add following
WHERE sysobjects.xtype = 'U' xtype='U' means only select Table object
How can i remove a server from enterprise manager
SQL-Server 2000:
how can I remove server registrations from enterprise manager, when
the servers are no more available?
For example there are several registrations from servers running under
a virtual pc (for developer purposes). Others are there from remote
support sessions. I'm not able to get in the context menu of that
servers.
Can you please help me?
Thanks Alfred
I found this to be possible.
Using the mouse, if one "right clicks" on the server registration and waits
for what seems like an age, the menu appears allowing one to delete the
registration. Don't left-click first!

I installed sql server 2005 enterprise edition and visual studion 2005
professional.

(i cant find a business intelligence project anyw here
thanks in advanceYou need to install the BI client tools from the SQL Server CD/DVD.
Note that you did not need VS 2005 unless you are writing custom assemblies
or using VS specific tools (like the new controls found in VS 2005).

How can I insert a new field between existing field?
Is there any way can I insert a new field between existing fields through TS
QL or other means, without using Enterprise Manager?
Thanks a lot.
Regards,
Alex AUHi,
With out dropping and recreating the table you can not insert a column in be
tween 2 existing columns.
Actually enterprise manager internally does below events while inserting a n
ew field...
1. Pull data out
2. Generate script of table and dependants
3. Drop and recreate the table with new structure
4. Load the data
So while you do a schema change on huge tables; it will result in longer ex
ecution time...
Thanks

Regards,
Alex AU|||The actual field order 'should' not matter. If you add a new column and it i
s at the 'end of the list', you can always retrieve the list of columns as y
ou want -with the new column in the 'middle'. Of course, that gets in the wa
y of using 'SELECT *' -but you shouldn't be doing that anyway!
(There some considerations that SQL Server will take in regard to field/data
type placement in the row on the datapage but that should not interfere with
your getting the data in the fashion you desire.)

If I want to mimic what Enterprise Manager do, what will be the right way?
Can I do as follows:-
- Create a temp table with the new fields inserted
- insert the data from old table to temp table
- drop the old table
- Create the table with the new structure
- insert the data back from temp table
- drop the temp table
Can I rename the temp table to the original table name to replace the last 3
steps?
Thanks a lot.

Field order is irrelevant. Given two tables:
TableA: RowID, Value, Description, UpdateDate
TableB: RowID, Value, UpdateDate, Description
The field order means nothing, because your queries should always
specify a field list:
SELECT Value, Description, UpdateDate
FROM TableA
WHERE RowID = 1
SELECT Value, Description, UpdateDate
FROM TableB
WHERE RowID = 1

to take account of all constraints - Defaults, FKs etc and all indexes. The

As long as the columns in the view are in the correct ordinal positions...
Table or view, bulk operations API's reference columns by ordinal position.

How can I get the table schema using Entreprise Library DAAB ?
i'm using the DAAB (Enterprise Library) to access the data in my system. But I need to use the schema from the tables i'm reading....
when I was using the default DataAdapter, I have used the FillSchema() method, but now, when I use de DAAB to fill de data, I couldn't get the primary keys columns, unique columns neither autoincrement columns...
This is the code that i'm using to get the data with DAAB:
===========================
Database db = DatabaseFactory.CreateDatabase();
DBCommandWrapper cmd = db.GetSqlStringCommandWrapper("SELECT * FROM Customer");
ds = db.ExecuteDataSet(cmd);
===========================
But this code don't return the schema from the "Customer" table.
Do you have any tip to do it?
thanks people

How can I get Enterprise Manager to see my remote server?
connection.
Enterprise Manager can't see the server, when I put in the name, EM times
out.
How can I Register this server if EM can't see it from here?
If I Register the server while I'm at that site, should it then work from my
remote office?
Thanks
KelvinNot being able to connect to the SQL server in question may be due to a
couple of different issues.
Please try the below suggestions:
1 - Possibly due to latency in the VPN connection causing a connection
time-out.
- Increase the Enterprise Manager timeout for the connection
- In Enterprise Manager, select TOOLS, OPTIONS and click on the ADVANCED
tab.
- Extend the value in the 'Login time-out' field (default of 10 seconds).
If the above doesn't work, then:
2 - Possibly a DNS/WINS resolution issue going over the VPN
- Run the Client Configuration Utility (CLICONFG.EXE) on your machine that
has the server registered in Enterprise Manager
- Click on the ALIAS tab
- Click ADD
- Type the name of the SQL Server (same name as you registered it with in
EM) in the 'Server Alias' field
- Click on the TCP/IP protocol (or applicable protocol if not using TCP/IP)
- In the 'Server Name' field, type the TCP/IP address for the server (or
the protocol's reference to the server if not using TCP/IP).
